Joyner Scores 18 To Lead Women's Basketball Past Chestnut Hill, 73-71

PHILADELPHIA (Nov. 24, 2010) – C.W. Post wrestled the lead away from Chestnut Hill late in the game and held on to defeat the Griffins, 73-71, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference women's basketball contest at Sorgenti Arena.
 
C.W. Post improves to 2-2 overall with the win. Chestnut Hill drops to 2-2 overall.
 
Junior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the Pioneers in scoring with 18 points with five assists in the game.
 
It was a sloppy game at times for each side as both teams totaled 51 committed turnovers. 
 
C.W. Post completed the game shooting .519 (27 of 52) from the field and converted 16 of 23 at the free throw line. Chestnut Hill shot .393 (22 of 56) from the field and was 18-for-23 at the charity stripe. The Griffins also held a 33-31 advantage on the glass.
 
Chestnut Hill grabbed an early lead in the game and led by six (9-3) before the Pioneers charged back with layups from sophomore forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) helped tie the score up. 
 
A layup from senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) at 13:59 gave the Pioneers a slim 11-10 lead but Chestnut Hill responded with a deuce from Cecelia Herald at 12:51.
 
Trailing by six (23-17) with 6:04 to play in the first half, the Pioneer offense battled back and outscored the Griffins, 17-4, over the next four minutes to take a 34-27 lead with 2:16 on the clock. Chestnut Hill added one more field goal when Lindsay Alexander scored a lay-in at the 16-second mark.
 
At the break, Marciniak led all scorers with nine points.
 
In the second half, the Griffins clawed their way back into the game and regained the lead (49-48) with a jumper from Jenn Delahanty at 8:13. A layup from Marciniak at 7:50 shifted the balance back in the Pioneers' favor. 
 
The teams continued to swap the lead over the next minute and a half but a game-tying triple from followed up by a layup from Joyner put the Pioneers out front (57-55) with 5:49 left to play.
 
The Griffins rallied to tie the game once more when Marqesah Spicer converted a pair of free throws to tie the game (57-57) at 4:30. C.W. Post scored the go ahead basket eight seconds later when Marciniak scored a layup that gave the Pioneers the lead for the remainder of the game.
 
Marciniak finished the game with 15 points and Aiken added 10 points and five rebounds. Lombardi chipped in four points and led the game with 12 rebounds.
Alexander finished the game scoring a game-high 20 points and pulled seven boards off the glass. Spicer and Latoya Laing each scored 11 points and Herald added 10.
 
C.W. Post is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 1 when it opens East Coast Conference play at Mercy College with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
