Second Half Surge Lifts New Haven Over Women's Basketball, 53-43

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2010) – The C.W. Post women's basketball team led 30-18 at halftime against the University of New Haven but could not withstand a second half run from the Chargers and fell, 53-43, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
New Haven improves its overall record to 1-1 while C.W. Post slips to 1-2 overall.
Senior guard #Janea Aiken# (St. Albans, N.Y.) led all scorers with 14 points and added five rebounds, three assists and a steal to her stats.
Olivia DeMarco led the Chargers with 12 points and pulled down eights with two steals.
The Chargers started out the game with a brief 6-4 lead before junior forward Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored on a lay-in to tie the game. Aiken followed up with another layup to give the Pioneers the lead for the remainder of the first half.
C.W. Post twice led by 14 points in the first half, beginning with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Quianna Tiggle (Bowie, Md.) at 6:02 and followed later by a layup from senior forward Anthia Smith (Elmont, N.Y.) at 2:59.
At the half, both Aiken and junior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) were leading the game with eight points apiece. Jill Baranger led the Chargers with six points.
In the second half, New Haven's offense quickly started to cut the down the lead and led the Pioneers on a 14-2 run that would tie the game at 32-all after Yasmin Ithier-Vicentyconverted a free throw at 13:20.
The Chargers pulled ahead in the game when DeMarco scored on a layup at 12:48. The Pioneers spent the remainder of the half trying to chase down the Chargers to regain the lead.
Trailing by eight (49-41) with 1:49 left to play, C.W. Post shaved the lead to six after Joyner nailed a jumper. The Pioneers had momentum on their side after the Chargers committed a team turnover with 1:02 to play, but could not capitalize lost possession on a turnover.
New Haven used up the clock well and closed out the game with two pairs of free throws from Nicole Pollard.
New Haven scored 21 points off Pioneer miscues and got help with 22 points off the bench. C.W. Post scored 17 points off Charger turnovers and held a 46-43 advantage on the glass.
Pollard and Ithier-Vicenty each scored 10 points for the Chargers.
Joyner finished the game with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the game with 11 rebounds for the Pioneers.
C.W. Post is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 24 when it travels for a non-conference tilt against Chestnut Hill with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
