Molloy Staves Off Women's Basketball, 59-55

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2010) – The Molloy College Lions emerged victoriously despite a late charge from the C.W. Post Pioneers and came away with a 59-55 win Wednesday evening in East Coast Conference women's basketball at Quealy Gymnasium.
Molloy improves to 11-6 overall and 8-4 in ECC action. The loss ends an 11-game win streak for the Pioneers as they dip to 14-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
Molloy shot .407 (22 of 54) from the floor and was 10-for-13 at the free throw line. C.W. Post shot .358 (19 of 53) from the field and held a 36-34 advantage on the glass.
Trailing by six (46-40) with 6:34 left to play in the second half, the Pioneers put Molloy's defense to work and went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to within one (48-47) with 4:25 left to play courtesy of a jumper and a trey from junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) and a layup from senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.).
The Lions quickly diffused the threat when freshman guard Christina Marra (Dix Hills, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:33 on the clock. Wheeler and senior forward E.J. Dreyer (Floral Park, N.Y.) each added layups to build Molloy's lead back up to eight (55-47) with 1:38 remaining.
Dreyer effectively sealed the win for the Lions with a pair of free throws at the 12-second mark to put the home team ahead, 59-52.
Aiken scored the game's final basket with a long three at the 5-second mark.
The first half was played close between the two teams. The Pioneers took a brief lead (2-0) early in the game when Aiken scored on a jumper at 19:38.
Dreyer tied the game with a layup up at 18:06 followed by a jumper from senior guard Clarissa Jones (Boston, Mass.) to give the Lions a 4-2 lead.
The Pioneers tied the game up at 14-all when Joyner hit a jump shot at 9:38. Molloy regained the lead for good when freshman guard Courtney Dolnick (Weston, Fla.) hit a 3-pointer at 9:10.
C.W. Post came to within three (28:25) when senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) banged in a three with 1:50 left on the clock. Jones cushioned the Lions' lead by sinking a pair of free throws with eight seconds left.
Junior center Caitlin Wheeler (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) led the Lions with 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Aiken led the Pioneers with a game-high 17 points with three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Joyner finished the game with 12 points and Catherall chipped in 11.
C.W. Post looks to turn things around when it faces off at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, Jan. 30 for a 1 p.m. tilt.
