OAKDALE, N.Y. (Jan. 20, 2010) Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) needed just 16 points to reach 1,000 for her career heading into Wednesday night's game at Dowling College. The senior guard did that and much more as she not only scored a career-high 34 points but also registered a single-game record of nine three-point field goals as C.W. Post battled Dowling through two overtimes to come away with a satisfying 94-89 victory in East Coast Conference women's basketball action at Dowling Gymnasium.

The Pioneers have now won 10 straight victories and improve to 13-3 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The loss dips the Golden Lions' record to 11-5 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

Catherall becomes the 13th player overall to score 1,000 points in a Pioneer uniform.  Senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) accomplished the same feat earlier this season in a non-conference game against New Haven (Dec. 29).

The Golden Lions thought they had done enough to secure the win when as they held off the Pioneers throughout most of the second half and built their lead as high as 12 (61-49) points with 10:04 left in regulation. But C.W. Post scratched its way back into the game as Catherall and junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) shot well down the stretch and scored 18 and 15 points, respectively in the half.

Dowling, still leading by five (74-69), saw its lead dwindle as Aiken, who was 15-for-18 at the line in the game, swished two free throws at 1:29 and Catherall sank a deep three at 1:09 to cut the lead to 74-73.

The Golden Lions pushed their lead to three (76-73) after senior forward Kasonna Samms(Massapequa, N.Y.) converted two free throws after a foul was called on Catherall with 52 seconds left to spare.

The Pioneers responded on the next possession and tied the game courtesy of a long trey from Catherall at the 35-second mark. Dowling came up empty on its next possession and Catherall's try for a game-winning 3-pointer with one second on the clock was unsuccessful.

The teams battled over the next five minutes of overtime, scoring six points apiece. Aiken made both free throws after a foul was called on Samms with 34 seconds left to give C.W. Post a slim 82-80 lead. But the Golden Lions forced another overtime when senior guard Simona Bartkova (Greve, Denmark) made two free throws after a foul was called on senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) with 15 seconds left.

This time, the Pioneer offense picked up and the visiting team outscored its host, 12-7. The game-winning basket came on the second free throw attempt from Aiken at the 40-second mark to give C.W. Post a 90-89 advantage.

Catherall helped ice the game for C.W. Post with two more free throws with 16 seconds left and Aiken added one more free throw with one second left to close out the game.

Sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) chipped in six points, six assists, three rebounds and a steal for the Pioneers.

C.W. Post finished the game shooting .390 (30 of 77) from the floor and was 22-for-30 at the charity stripe. Dowling shot .419 (31 of 74) from the field and had a 51-44 advantage on the glass.

Senior guard Christie Marrone (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Golden Lions with 29 points and added seven rebounds, three assists and five steals to her stats. Marrone was 11-for-20 from the field and 5-for-7 from long range.

Samms pulled down a game-high 13 boards off the glass and chipped eight points, two assists and four steals.

Catherall eclipsed her own record of three point field goals previously set when she tallied six against St. Thomas Aquinas as a freshman in 2007.

C.W. Post returns to action Saturday, Jan. 23 to host New York Institute of Technology for a 1:30 scheduled tip-off.
