Kohler, Montalvo Lead Men's Basketball Past Evangel, 94-67

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 30, 2009) –
Junior guard Gil Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) and freshman guard Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J) led the C.W. Post men's basketball team to a 94-67 victory over Evangel Univeristy on Saturday, scoring 22 and 29 points respectively as the Pioneers won the final game of the C.W. Post Holiday Invitational.
The Pioneers improve their record to 6-4 while Evangel slips to 7-6.
The Pioneers took an early lead and quickly pushed out to double digits over Evangel, as they led 18-8 at the 14:34 mark following a jumper from Nemanja Jokic (Sombor, Serbia). Keeping the offensive pressure on, C.W. Post increased its lead into the 20's as they pulled ahead to a 35-14 advantage at 10:12 in the first.  
Kohler had a blazing first half from the Pioneers, scoring 22 points and shooting 8-12 from the field and 3-6 from beyond the arc. Montalvo also hit double figures in the first half with perfect 5-5 shooting from the field and a 3-3 mark from three-point range, good for 13 points.
The second half saw Evangel score two straight baskets of Pioneer turnovers to pull to within 15 points, but again the C.W. Post offense took over as the Pioneers went on an 11-0 run that lasted until the 11:14 mark and put the hosts on top by a 66-42 count.
The Pioneers led by at least 20 points for the remainder of the game, finishing with a final stat line of 39-72 from the floor (54%), 9-24 from three-point range (37%) and 7-9 from the charity stripe (77%). In addition to 29 points from Kohler, the freshman also added four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Montalvo contributed five assist and two steals to his 22 points, while senior guard Stephen Mears (Middle Island, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points on 5-10 shooting from the floor and 2 treys, and senior guard Roberto Macklin (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) added 12 points on 6-10 shooting.
Evangel was led by Cale Ramsey with 12 points and Josh Kleine with 10.
C.W. Post is back in action on Wednesday as they host Molloy College at 7 p.m.
