Joyner, Catherall Lead Women's Basketball Past Mercy, 101-64

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2010) – C.W. Post scored 56 points in the first half and maintained offensive presence in the second half to defeat Mercy College, 101-64, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Saturday afternoon.
C.W. Post wins its ninth straight contest and improves to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play. Mercy loses its second straight conference game and dips to 4-11 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
Junior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) scored 22 points and 21 points, respectively in the game. Catherall scored 19 of hers in the first half alone. The Pioneers boasted 11 different scorers on the final stat sheet.
The Mavericks held a 7-6 lead in the first half but it did not hold when Joyner scored on a lay-in at 14:38 that was the start of an 8-0 spurt and the Pioneers never relinquished the lead.
Mercy climbed back to within a nine-point deficit (39-30) with 3:21 on the clock. Catherall swished a 3-pointer at 3:11 to build the Pioneers' lead back to double digits (42-30.
At the half, the Pioneers carried a 56-37 lead back to their locker room, shooting .500 (21 of 42) from the field, including 6-for-10 behind the arc. Mercy shot a healthy .577 (15 of 26) from the floor.
In the second half, the high powered offense continued to flourish for the Pioneers as they broke away from the Mavericks in the game, leading by as many as 37 points with 1:35 remaining in regulation.
C.W. Post was 18-for-31 from the field and went 5-for-8 from long range in the half.
Junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) finished the game with 19 points, including three treys for the Pioneers.
Sophomore guards Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md.) and Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) led Mercy, scoring 18 points apiece. Sophomore center Ann Butehorn (Farmingdale, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points.
C.W. Post cleaned up on the glass, outrebounding the home team, 37-28, and scored 34 points off 25 Maverick miscues.
The last time the Pioneers reached the century mark in a game was Feb. 8, 2007 in a 105-56 win at Concordia College.
