Women's Basketball Hands Bridgeport First Conference Loss; Aiken Leads Pioneers With 17

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2010) – C.W. Post's hot win streak continued as the Pioneers won their eighth straight contest with a 70-57 win over conference leader University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Wednesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The win improves C.W. Post to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in conference action. The loss puts a three-game win streak on hold for the Purple Knights as they lose their first conference match of the season and slip to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the ECC.
C.W. Post shot .491 (28 of 57) from the floor and went 10-for-13 at the charity stripe. The Pioneers outrebounded the Purple Knights on the glass, 40-31. Bridgeport finished the game shooting .333 (19 of 57) from the floor and was 15-for-19 at the line.
Junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with a game-high 17 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field.
Trailing 17-16 with 5:10 left to spare in the first half, the Pioneers took the lead when junior forward Anthia Smith (Elmira, N.Y.) banked a jumper in the paint. From there, the host team scored 14 unanswered points to lead 30-17 with 59 seconds on the clock.
C.W. Post led 30-20 at the half and was led in scoring by Joyner who shot 5-for-10 from the floor and 1-for-2 at the line for 11 points.
The Pioneers got help in the second half from senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.), who was 3-for-3 from long range and registered 11 points.
The Purple Knights cut the lead down to 37-30 with 16:37 left to play but the Pioneers answered with a jumper from Aiken at 16:08 followed by a 3-pointer from Catherall at 15:13 and C.W. Post maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) completed the game with 12 points with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior forward Shatima Greer (Central Islip, N.Y.) chipped in eight points and pulled nine rebounds off the glass.
Beddome highlighted the Purple Knights' score sheet, registering a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists a block and two steals. Junior guard Meghan Lewis (Spring, Texas) added 14 points and junior forward Ana-Marie Kammer (Frankfurt, Germany) scored 11 points with an assist and three steals.
C.W. Post returns to action Saturday, Jan. 16 when it tips off at Mercy College at 12 p.m.
