Women's Basketball Can't Contain Mercy As Pioneers Fall 77-70

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2009) – Mercy College put together a second half rally to come back and defeat C.W. Post, 77-70, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The win snaps a two-game skid for the Mavericks as they improve to 7-14 overall and 4-8 on conference action. The loss drops the Pioneers to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in the ECC.
Mercy shot .300 (9 of 30) in the first half but recovered to finish the game shooting .446 (29 of 65) from the field. C.W. Post shot .519 (14 of 27) from the floor in the first half and finished the game shooting .386 (22 of 57). The Pioneers cleaned up on the glass, pulling down 45 rebounds to Mercy's 35.
The Pioneers started off on an offensive drive in the first half, converting 14 of 27 from the floor, including 5 of 7 from behind the arc.
Trailing 6-3 with 17:23 on the clock, freshman guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) swished her first of three trifectas in the half that started a 10-3 run for the Pioneers.
The Mavericks tied the game at 22-all after two converted free throws from freshman guard Simone Williams at 6:24. The Pioneers responded with a 16-4 spurt that included three pointers from freshman forward
Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) at 3:14 and Joyner at 2:26. A layup from sophomore forward
Caitlin Wheeler (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) at 1:10 gave the home team a 38-25 advantage.
The Pioneers headed into the break with a 40-28 lead.
The Mavericks started the second half outscoring the Pioneers 10-2 through the first six minutes of play and closed the lead to 42-40.
The Pioneers held off the Mavericks and built its lead back up to four (53-49) after two made free throws from Joyner at 9:47. Mercy answered with a three-point field goal from senior guard Christina Baxter at 9:36 and reclaimed the lead with a short jumper from sophomore forward Delmara Reece at 9:10.
C.W. Post tied the game up for the fourth time (57-57) after junior guard
Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a fast break layup after a steal from Joyner at 7:48.
The two teams toggled the lead until the Mavericks, trailing by two (68-66), tied the game up once again on a layup from freshman guard Aimee Levine at 2:40. C.W. Post responded with two free throws from senior forward
Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.) with 2:14 remaining.
Baxter banged home a three-pointer at 2:04 that helped close out the game as the Mavericks outscored the Pioneers 7-0 in the final minutes of action.
Reece and Levine led the Mavericks with 17 points while Reece added 11 rebounds to her statsheet.
Murrer and Pawlicki each scored 17 points as Murrer pulled down 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the game with 14 rebounds. Joyner completed the game with 15 points and seven assists.
C.W. Post returns to action Feb. 11 at Concordia College (N.Y.) for a 5 p.m. tip off.
