Women's Basketball Shoots Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 63-59

SPARKHILL, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2009) – Four players scored in double figures as C.W. Post knocked off St. Thomas Aquinas, 63-59, in East Coast Conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening at Aquinas Hall.
The Pioneers improve to 8-10 overall and 6-5 in conference play while the Spartans fall to 6-14 overall and 3-8 in ECC action.
C.W. Post shot .417 (25 of 60) from the floor and went 9-for-16 from the charity stripe. St. Thomas Aquinas shot .350 (21 of 60) from the floor and held a 39-38 advantage in rebounds over the Pioneers.
STAC jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin the game before the Pioneers answered with a layup from junior forward
Chantee Hallett (Bronx, N.Y.) and back-to-back layups from junior guard
Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) to claim the lead at 15:57.
The Spartans reclaimed the lead (7-6) with a jumper in the paint from Sylvia Davis at 15:44 before junior guard
Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) buried a trifecta at 15:35 that began a 12-2 run that capped off with a layup from Hallett at 10:10.
STAC followed up by outscoring the visiting team 7-2 over the next two minutes in the game to close the gap to 18-16 in favor of the Pioneers with 9:09 on the clock.

Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) extended the Pioneers' lead to five as they closed out the half on a 9-2 spurt. C.W. Post led 32-22 at the break.
The Spartans threatened to close the gap in the second half and tied the game at 52-all before retaking the lead with a pair of free throws from Natalie Catavero with 2:54 remaining.
Freshman forward
Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave the Pioneers the lead with a three-pointer at 2:19.
A pair of free throws from Catherall with 34 ticks left on the clock helped secure the win as Moore closed out the game with a layup with one second on the clock.
Joyner led the Pioneers with 14 points, shooting 6 of 14 from the floor while adding three assists and one steal. Senior forward
Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.) added 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds along with two assists and two steals. Moore completed the game with 11 points while Pawlicki added 10 toward the cause.
Briana Sloper led the Spartans, scoring a game-high 16 points while Catavero and Theresa Dowling each scored 10 points. Kimberly Vareles cleaned up on the glass with a game-leading 10 rebounds.
C.W. Post is back in action Feb. 7 when it hosts Mercy College at 1:30 p.m. at the Pratt Recreation Center.
