GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2009)- In the final game of the regular season, the C.W. Post Pioneers were able to outlast a late run by the Adelphi Panthers and claim the fifth seed in the upcoming East Coast Conference tournament with a 64-58 victory.

The Pioneers, who shot 51 percent (27 of 53) from the field, finish the season 10-8 in ECC action and 12-13 overall.  The Panthers fell to 10-8 in conference and 13-14 overall.

In her last regular season contest as a member of the Pioneers, senior forward Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.) posted a double-double, with a team-leading 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds.  Murrer made nine of her 11 shots from the field, including a huge three-point play to give C.W. Post the lead with two minutes remaining in the game.  Two other Pioneers scored in double figures; Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in 15 to go along with 10 rebounds while Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) had 12 points and six assists.

Poor shooting led to Adelphi's demise, as seniors Lisa Minetta and Ashley Ciaffa combined for 10-35 shooting from the field.  The Panthers shot just 33 percent (23-70) for the game.  Jasmine Travers had a solid game for Adelphi, scoring 15 points on 7-11 shooting.

The Pioneers held a four-point lead at the halftime break and extended to a 42-34 lead less than five minutes into the second half.  Adelphi stormed back to take a 55-54 lead with under six minutes to go in the game.  C.W. Post took the lead back on Murrer's three-point play and the Pioneers never looked back.

Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to Bridgeport on Wednesday for the opening round of the ECC tournament against the fourth-seeded Purple Knights.  Adelphi will head to Molloy to battle the third-seeded Lions Wednesday evening.
