Bridgeport Pushes Past Women's Basketball, 64-49

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2009) – Junior guard
Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds but the University of Bridgeport held on to defeat C.W. Post, 64-49, in a Saturday afternoon East Coast Conference women's basketball game at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Bridgeport improves to 9-14 overall and 8-6 in conference play while C.W. Post slips to 9-12 overall and 7-7 in ECC action.
Junior forward Shannon Malone led the Purple Knights with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Bridgeport shot .422 (19 of 45) from the floor and converted 25 of 31 from the charity stripe. C.W. Post shot .345 (20 of 58) from field goal range. Bridgeport held a 35-32 advantage in rebounds.
To start the game, the Pioneers sprung to an 8-2 lead that included a jumper and layup from senior forward
Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.). The Purple Knights tied the score at 10-all after a jumper from sophomore guard Julia Busalt at 12:11.
Both teams traded baskets the remainder of the half and C.W. Post clung to a 25-24 lead at the break.
In the second half, with the scored tied at 32, Malone converted two free throws at 12:10 that started a 10-2 spurt for the Purple Knights that lasted until Murrer sank two free throws at 8:45 to cut the deficit to 42-35 in favor of Bridgeport.
The Pioneers cut the lead down to within four after two free throws from freshman guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 6:42 but the Purple Knights held on and finished the game outscoring C.W. Post 9-3.
Busalt added 13 points for the Purple Knights with three assists and three steals while freshman forward Julia Colley scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds.
Whitney finished the game with 13 points with five rebounds while junior guard
Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) scored 11 points with four points.
C.W. Post will return to action Feb. 18 when it travels to play next-door neighbor New York Institute of Technology.
