Late Offensive Push Sparks Women's Basketball To 82-54 Win Over NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Dec. 12, 2009) – A late offensive run in the second half spurred the C.W. Post Pioneers to an 82-54 victory over New York Institute of Technology in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Saturday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play while NYIT drops to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the ECC.
Led by junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.), who scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half, the Pioneers blew the game open with a 29-4 run that began with a 3-point field goal from Aiken at 8:45 in the second half and was capped off with a layup from freshman forward Nicole Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at 2:20 to boost the visitors to an 81-49 advantage.
The teams played a close first half as they exchanged the score five times with two ties.
With the score tied at 16-all, the Pioneers regained the lead on a long 20-foot basket from behind the arc from sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) with 3:41 left to play.
The Bears briefly tied the game (22-22) when senior forward Madison Robertson (Shirley, N.Y.) converted a free throw at 1:19.
The Pioneers quickly answered with another 3-pointer, this time from freshman guard Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) at the 45-second mark.
Senior forward Dena McKinney (Fishkill, N.Y.) scored the final basket of the half on a layup with 18 seconds on the clock.
C.W. Post led by as many as 32 points with 2:20 to play in the second half. The Pioneers held a 24-18 advantage on points off turnovers and added an 18-0 advantage in fast break points to the stat sheet.
The Pioneers won out on the boards, pulling down 41 rebounds to the Bears' 32.
Joyner completed the game with 17 points while senior guard Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) chipped in 16 points along with five assists. Junior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) grabbed 11 balls off the glass.
Robertson led the Bears with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds.
C.W. Post will take a hiatus and return to action Dec. 29 on the road against the University of New Haven.
