Joyner's 25 Lead Women's Basketball Past Adelphi In Season Opener, 55-49

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2009) – Sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored a game-high 25 points as C.W. Post opened its 2009-10 season with a 55-49 win over Long Island rival Adelphi University Monday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Junior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points for the Pioneers and teammate Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) pulled 12 rebounds off the glass.
Adelphi had the hot shooting hand in the first half as the visitors were 10 for 24 from the field and were led by freshman center Samantha Briendbach (Northport, N.Y.) with 12 points.
Trailing 16-15 with 8:36 left to play, the Panther offense was spurred by a jumper from freshman guard Alexis Williams (Annandale, Va.) that began a 10-3 run as Adelphi led 25-19 with 3:52 remaining in the first half.
The Pioneers cut into the lead with two free throws from Joyner at the 3-minute mark and continued to close the gap with a pair of free throws from Joyner at 2:03 and one from senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) with 44 seconds remaining.
C.W. Post's run continued into the second half as the Pioneers opened with seven unanswered points, beginning with a 3-pointer from Aiken at 17:41.
Adelphi scored its first basket at the 14-minute mark on a jumper in the paint from freshman guard Kara Tancredi (Beacon, N.Y.) and both teams continued to battle in the half.
C.W. Post saw its lead dwindle to two (47-45) after sophomore guard Erika Cottle (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a layup underneath at 3:56.
The Pioneers responded with a layup from Aiken at 3:26 that started an 8-1 spurt and was capped off by a layup from Moore in the paint with 25 seconds left in regulation.
C.W. Post's defense was stingy toward Briendbach as she scored two points in the second half to complete the game with 14 points. Tancredi chipped in 13 for the Panthers.
C.W. Post is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 18 for a 5 p.m. tip off at Queens College. The Pioneers return to host Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 1:30 p.m.
