Women's Basketball Wins Home Opener Against St. Thomas Aquinas, 64-54

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2008) – Senior
Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.) registered a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead C.W. Post past St. Thomas Aquinas in a Saturday afternoon East Coast Conference women's basketball game at Pratt Recreation Center.
C.W. Post, who last claimed a win in its home opener on Dec. 1, 2004 against Molloy College (55-50), wins its first conference match of the year and improves to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference while St. Thomas Aquinas drops to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Pioneers completed the game shooting .311 (19 of 61) from field goal range and held a 38-31 advantage in rebounds. St. Thomas Aquinas shot .429 (18 of 42) from the field.
Murrer was 3-for-7 from field goal range and was a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line while also adding a block on defense.
Sophomore guard
Emily Hall (Montclair, N.J.) also scored 17 points, including four from behind the arc for the Pioneers.
Junior guard Colleen Vogel scored a game-high 20 points with six rebounds and two assists for the Spartans.
C.W. Post built a sizeable 10-2 lead to start the game and continued to lead throughout the half. The Spartans threatened in the last minutes of the first half and cut the lead to 22-20 after a three-point field goal from sophomore guard Theresa Dowling at 4:24.
The Pioneers used an 8-2 run to lead 30-22 at the half.
In the second half, C.W. Post continued to protect it lead with the contribution of 15 points from Murrer in the half. The Pioneers led by as many as 13 points with 1:10 remaining in regulation.
Freshman forward
Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) added nine points via three triples while junior guard
Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) scored eight points and added three assists and one steal for C.W. Post.
Dowling completed the game scoring 15 points while freshman forward Kimberly Vareles pulled down 10 rebounds for the Spartans.
C.W. Post will play at Mercy College on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
