Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener Against Mansfield, 71-56

BLOOMSBURG, Pa.
(Nov. 15, 2008) – Freshman guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored 20 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead C.W. Post past Mansfield University, 71-56, Saturday evening as part of the Patriot Inn Classic women's basketball tournament at Bloomsburg University.
 
C.W. Post wins its first season opener since 2003 and improves to 1-0 while Mansfield begins its season at 0-1.
 
The Pioneers shot 26 of 49 (.531) from the floor and went 13-for-17 at the charity stripe while holding a 35-28 advantage on the boards. Mansfield shot 17 of 54 from the field (.315), including 7 of 24 beyond the arc. 
 
Freshman forward Mallory Moore led the Mountaineers with 15 points, including three triples and six converted free throws.
 
Mansfield held a 12-11 lead with 14:09 in the first half before sophomore guard Emily Hall (Montclair, N.J.) scored a layup that sparked an 11-2 run, giving the Pioneers a 22-14 lead with 8:53 remaining. 
 
The Pioneers were able to hold the lead and headed for the locker room with a 28-22 advantage at the half.
 
C.W. Post opened the second half outscoring the Mountaineers by an 11-3 count (39-27) before senior guard Alicia Espigh swished a 3-point field goal at 13:59. 
 
The Pioneers continued to build their lead and led by as many as 16 points with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. Their final six points were scored on converted free throws by junior guards Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) and Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) with under a minute left to play.

Hall finished with 18 points while senior forward Whitney Murrer (Richmond, Va.) added 11 points with eight rebounds for the Pioneers.
 
C.W. Post will return to action against host Bloomsburg on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m.
