BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2008) - Sophomore forward
Amanda Nann (Hamburg, N.J.) scored a goal and assisted on another, and
Krystal Napolitano (Coram, N.Y.) notched two assists as the Pioneers shot past the Lady Rams of Philadelphia University, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hickox Field.
During the game, the Pioneers wore pink in support of breast cancer awareness, as part of the Play 4 The Cure breast cancer initiative sponsored by the Susan G. Komen foundation.
The Pioneers improve to 7-4 with the win while the Lady Rams drop to 4-10 with the loss.
For the second game in a row, Nann got the Pioneers on the board in the first five minutes of play, when she took a pass from Napolitano just 3:36 into the game, and sent a reverse stick shot into the right corner for a 1-0 lead.
After nearly a scoreless 45 minutes, Nann assisted on freshman
Brie Claire Drost's (Wading River, N.Y.) first collegiate goal, as
Kristina Gustafson (New Braintree, Mass.) took a shot on a corner, finding Nann's stick, who passed the ball to Drost, who redirected it into the bottom right corner for a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore forward
Amy Lillis (Holtsville, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with her first goal of the season, as the Pioneers found themselves on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Napolitano sent a pass to Lillis, who dribbled once and sent a reverse stick shot into the bottom right corner of the cage for a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Cortney Colern (Barker, N.Y.) posted four saves in the shutout as she earned her seventh win of the season. Her counterpart Anne Strobel made five saves in the cage for Philadelphia.
The Pioneers held a 13-8 edge in shots, and the two teams each took seven penalty corners, respectively.
The Pioneers will return to action next as they will host neighboring rival Adelphi University on October 7 at 4 p.m.
