Now in his 14th season as the LIU Post quarterbacks coach, and his sixth season as passing game coordinator, Jonathan Gill returned to his New York roots in 2004 after competing for four seasons at quarterback with the University of Akron. During his time with the Pioneers, Gill has coached three All-Americans, while also showcasing six quarterbacks receiving conference, regional or national awards.
His early career accomplishments started in 2005 when he utilized the talent of Northeast-10 and ECAC Most Valuable Player, Rob Blount, who threw for 2,995 passing yards during the team’s national quarterfinals run. The total ranked as the most in Division II history by a quarterback who also rushed for over 1,000 yards during the same season. In 2009, Erik Anderwkavich received All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference accolades under Gill’s leadership.
In recent seasons, Gill was instrumental in developing the play of Harlon Hill Trophy finalist Steven Laurino. The 2014 NE-10 MVP, Laurino broke the school's all-time records for career passing yards (9,537), total offense (11,713), completions (845) and passing touchdowns (84). During that season, the Pioneers led the NE-10 in passing yards (3,602), third-down conversions (49%), and red zone touchdown percentage (68%).
During the 2015 campaign, Jeff Kidd led the NE-10 in passing yards (2,795), while the Pioneers once again led the league in third-down conversions (42%), total first downs (277), and passing first downs (137), helping Kidd garner first-team all-conference accolades. Despite suffering an injury during the 2016 season, Kidd once again was outstanding under center, finishing with a 65-percent completion percentage, 2,825 passing yards, and 28 touchdowns, leading to All-American, NE-10 MVP, and NE-10 first-team all-conference recognition.
The strong quarterback play continued in 2017 for LIU Post, as Gill coached Yianni Gavalas into the NE10 Offensive Player of the Year, finishing with 3,114 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and a 70.8-percent completion percentage. Gavalas finished just one touchdown shy of matching the LIU Post program record, while the Pioneer offense led the NE10 in total offense (4,996 yards), total first downs (258), passing first downs (140), and in the highest success of third-down conversions in the country including all levels of college football (58%).
