Entering her eighth season as the head coach of the LIU Post volleyball team, Shellane Ogoshi is one of just three coaches in program history with 100 or more wins. Ogoshi's 142 wins are the most in the history of the team, and her current record stands at 142-92.
In the 2015 campaign, Ogoshi became the program's all-time winningest coach, on the heels of a 23-11 record. The Pioneers went on to secure bids in the East Coast Conference Tournament and NCAA Division II Championship. Her strong coaching mindset helped Rachel Ringor to her second ECC Libero of the Year selection and Danielle Valenza to an AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention nod. Additionally, Ogoshi's LIU Post squad led the ECC in service aces on the year with 252.
Coming into the 2014 season, Ogoshi needed just one win to reach the 100-victory plateau. Her team ensured that the wait would not be long, winning their opening match in five sets against Saint Leo at the Springhill Suites Invitational in Alaska. As Ogoshi's first victory of the season was a milestone, so was her final victory of the season. The team's 20th win came in the first round of the NCAA East Region Championship, and it would be her 119th victory, surpassing Debra Intorcia for second all-time on the career wins list.
Ogoshi's success stemmed down to her players, as freshman outside hitter Danielle Valenza captured both ECC and ECAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Valenza recorded 363 kills, 205 digs and a .206 attack percentage in her first year in Brookville. Additionally, junior middle hitter Melissa Hansen was named an All-ECC Second Team performer after a brilliant season in which she recorded a team-high 100 blocks.
The 2013 season will go into the record books as one of the most successful campaigns in LIU Post volleyball history. Under Ogoshi's leadership, the Pioneers advanced to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament, and captured the NCAA East Region title for the first time in school history. The Pioneers advanced to the National Quarterfinals and earned a place in the AVCA's final Top-25 rankings of the season, finishing with a record of 25-10. Junior libero Rachel Ringor earned ECC Libero of the Year accolades, along with mentions to the ECAC All-Star Team and NCAA Division II East Region Second Team. Junior setter Lulu Centro was also named an ECAC All-Star, while freshman outside hitter Shelby McCool picked up ECC Rookie of the Year and NCAA Division II East Region Second Team kudos.
Ogoshi was named a Thirty Under 30 Recipient at the end of the 2014 season by the AVCA. The honor makes Ogoshi a two-time recipient, as she received the praise in 2010, as well. Ogoshi was one of five NCAA Division II coaches to garner this accolade.
The Pioneers finished the 2012 campaign securing a 23-15 record and an in-conference record of 11-5. The squad earned its second NCAA Tournament berth in three years after making its way into the ECC championship game. Senior middle blocker Lisa Delfs and junior middle blocker Makamae Namahoe earned second team All-Conference accolades, while freshman libero Rachel Ringor set a new school record for digs in a season.
The 2011 season proved favorable for Ogoshi, as the Pioneers finished the year with a record of 17-15. Sophomore middle blocker Makamae Namahoe led the squad to yet another ECC tournament, while earning her second consecutive All-Conference recognition.
The 2010 season was even better than the first season of 2009 for Ogoshi, as the Pioneers earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament with 20-13 overall record for the year. A combination of leadership and youth helped propel LIU Post to the big dance with senior Marilena Guadagnini and freshman Makamae Namahoe earning All-Conference nods.
The 2009 season was a productive year for Ogoshi, as the Pioneers finished with a record of 14 wins and 14 losses, earning her Coach of the Year honors within the Conference. Also, two Pioneer players were named All-Conference Selections. Senior middle blocker Kerry Heitner and freshman middle blocker Kirsten Taylor represented the Pioneers.
Ogoshi spent one season as an assistant coach at her alma mater Hofstra University, where she assisted with all facets of the program.
The Hawaii native put together a standout four year career for the Pride, as evidenced by her jersey retirement in the fall of 2008. Ogoshi played in 118 matches during her career and tallied 4,597 assists and 1,660 digs. She was a two-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Setter of the Year (2005 and 2006) and also earned 2005 CAA Player of the Year accolades. The 2004 CAA Rookie of the Year and a CAA All-Rookie team selection, Ogoshi went on to earn All-CAA first team honors in each of her next three seasons. In addition, she was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-Region pick as a sophomore and was the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player in 2006.
In addition to her coaching stint at Hofstra, Ogoshi has also coached club volleyball with the Pakela Volleyball Club (Honolulu, HI) since 2004 and the TCA Volleyball Club (Hempstead, NY) since 2008.
A two-time ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Ogoshi graduated with a degree in International Business and Finance in 2007 and currently resides in Levittown, N.Y.
