Derrick Dunlap returns to the men’s basketball coaching staff for his second season, bringing over a decade of coaching knowledge and education and administrative experience to the Pioneer ranks.
Most recently, Dunlap served as a volunteer coach for the Riverside Church AAU program, and has been the Bronx Charter elementary school basketball coach for the past three seasons.
Previous coaching stints include Howard High in Columbia, Md. for the 2001-02 season, where Dunlap led the team to a 15-8 record. The following year he led Crossland High in Temple Hills, Md., to a 17-9 record. He also served as an assistant for three years at Montrose Christian in Rockville, Md., under the legendary coach Stu Vetter, helping the Mustangs to a perennial national ranking.
Dunlap played collegiately at Fairfield University for three seasons before transferring to Central Connecticut for his senior season, as the Blue Devils posted a 15-13 record and Dunlap averaged 10 points a game and led the team in assists with 5.4 per game.
Serving as a teacher in Washington, D.C. from 1998-2003, Dunlap then moved into the administrative world, working as an assistant principal at two Viriginia School Districts before moving to New York City. He currently serves as the School Administrator for Bronx Arts Charter in the Bronx, N.Y.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1996 from Central Connecticut, and two years later received his Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Bridgeport. Most recently, he received a second Master’s Degree in Education Supervision and Administration from Johns Hopkins in 2007.
Dunlap resides in New Rochelle, N.Y.
